hey man its ok that you got into the car from Initial D. I got into the whole scene about 2 years ago from option. Initial D is kinda a cool anime but try to get into the real stuff, watch option, BMI and drift tengoku. Initial D is kinda fake, at least the drifting scenes and racing speeds, but its kinda a cool story. Anyway I just bought a 87 gts coupe and its sweet. My other car is a s13 and the s13 is cool to. my sugestion to you is dont go out and drift it right away. You are 16 so you really havent probably learned to drive yet (dont worry i havent either and i'm 18). Make sure you are comfortable driving the car around town before you try to fling it sideways. When youv'e been driving around for a month or two and have got used to the handling and shifting thats when you want to go somewhere safe to try some grip driving with the car for a while and see how hard you can take turns while gripping. Then go and try to drift once you have got a good feeling of how your car responds. And the 86 is a good car, it will be easy to work on compared to other cars. Try to by the car if its in pretty good shape.

Just a small note, he did mention it being an 87. I wasn't sure when Toyota switched over to fwd, so I just did a quick search. In 87, you could get either I guess. The GTS seems to be the rwd version, the others fwd I think. Hopefully someone else can clarify on this. I'm just mentioning it cause you don't want to accidently get a fwd car or something.
Yeah, I'll have to totally agree with the others here. Don't start thinking about power. Really, being new to driving, you shouldn't even think about drifting. You will probably total the car, maybe several, trying to learn. I was 16 once. I know how you think when you're that young. I know how you drive when you're that young.
If I had any authority, I'd really ban drifting until you actually understand the concepts behind it and can actually drive a car. Before you even start, you should be able to handle a car well. Then you should also understand the physics behind it. How do you drift? Why does it behave a certain way, or how can I make it behave a certain way? A solid understanding of the principles behind drifting and a competent ability to handle a car will keep you safe when exploring drifting.
Now I know that's not a realistic thing. It would be like all of us going to racing school just to get our drivers license. I wouldn't mind it, but not realistic.
For learning, start with the stock motor. That way you can't get real stupid with it. Speed kills. If you can't go that fast, you're safer, lol. Learn how to drive the car first. When you know it and understand its limits, you won't go past them. I'd personally suggest a year of just normal driving just to get used the car and what it can do. Squeel the tires around some corners. Have a little fun. When you're fully comfortable, then learn the concepts of drifting. Learn the techniques and the physics behind them. Knowledge and actual understanding is a powerful thing. After you actually know how things work, try out some techniques. Then it's just practice and improve. If you just jump right into it and try to minic Initial D, you'll end up in a ditch somewhere on your roof and you'll wonder what the heck just happened. How can you control what you don't understand. Just my words of wisdom, lol.
Don't forget, that 87 Corolla, is it fwd or rwd? It would be useful to know.

oh yeah and 350 hp out of an 86 i a fr freakin lot. ueo pushes about 200 and so does yoshioka and terasaki gen. okubo has a sr20det powered levin that pushes somewhere around 300 and his car is sweet but if you have that much power you are goin to have to really reinforce the chassis and you are goin to have to have some dough. The 4ag i doubt would be able to take over 300hp and swapin in a sr is goin to take a lot of time and work and money. just learn with the stock power man, its all you need. oh yeah be safe dont drift in the middle of traffic.

I got into drifting and AE86's from reading Japanese magazines and watching v-opt videos.... all before I knew what the h-e-l-l Initial D was. But I give credit to Initial D for getting me interested more in the hachiroku.

I think they'res numerous forums covering the topic of the AE86, basiclly a regualr non-race built 4-AG(E) will never make more then 250hp, A 5-AG(E) or 7-AG(E) may make somthing higher then 250, but the AE86 chassis wont be able to hold the power with out major modifactions. I'm 16 also... I bought my AE86 at the end of last year, its cost me... $150-$200 so far, but I am about to drop $200 more for a new clutch. Basiclly all i can reccomend is read as much as possible... but remeber not everything you read is true. If you want to know more, Chilton has a book about the Corolla , its a repair manual but has wiring\vaccum digarms, break away pics of the 4-AG(E) and 4-AC
My 2 cents worth,...

Chilton sucks. Toyota factory service manual is less generalized and precise with all of the right torque readings and procedures. Never trust a aftermarket manual, EVER. If its your only choice use it. If not use what the Factory manual.
Find them online here.

Also keep in mind that building a 4ag that fast would prove unreliable as anything. A friend of mine is pushing 25+lbs of boost for about 350hp on his 16v. He goes through spark plugs once or twice a week.
You'd also have to build the rest of the car around it. Any more than about 200hp the stock trans and rear will snap like twigs.
If you have 10-15k go ahead. Even if you make it the car will be totally useless. Drifting will be near impossible, especially for you.
I'd rather have the stock 115HP 16v than some crappy race engine any day.
Do yourself a favor, drive it for a year then start doing stuff to it.

back to what was said earlier the 7-AG i believe puts out about....210 i think. but then the Toda Racing Engine is like 240. dont ever think you're gettin a formula atlantic engine cause that's $16,000 for the parts alone not including the 20V AE101 engine.
I <3 AE86
