Yeah Alex is from Hawaii. I can think of a few Hawaii drifters that could give Sam a run for his money, but I guess it depends on what type of track we're talking about. If its the extremely long sweeping turns at Irwindale, then I think some the Hawaii guys would have trouble because their cars would seem underpowered for that type of track. But if it was the Hawaii Track I think Sam would be scratching his head because 100hp cars would be keeping up. Not making any excuses, I think thats how it would turn out ...Comment

Here is my opinion....
I don't think most (I stress most) of the mainland drivers believe they are the best. It is all about opportunity. Most of these drivers did not expect to get sponsored or have the opportunity to enter D1. The opportunity approached them. I don't know how many drivers would decline a full sponsored drive because they thought someone else deserves it more. Example... If Apex approached any driver here, would you say: "Sorry, I can't except a car and funding because I know there is someone else who is much better....."
I have been to Hawaii and I have seen and interacted with some of the drifters there. I will be the first one to admit that the drivers there are good... very good... In fact, there are a lot of people (drivers, sponsors and organizers) that would love the opportunity to have the Hawaiian element at all U.S. events, but like some people have mentioned on this thread it is about economics. The drivers in Hawaii have not been forgetten or ignored because I hear a few drivers name get mentioned A LOT over here on the mainland.

Other racers have come here to Hawaii before...
For quite a few years now, the guys from Alaska have come to Hawaii to drag race with the locals here. they worked a deal with Sealand to ship their cars here. I think the most that ever came was like 12 cars.Comment

I've never heard any drifter claim to be the best in America. Perhaps i missed those interviews.
You hawaiian guys do sound abit bitter about it. And i know it isnt fare for other guys to get sponsorship if your better at it. But sponsorship often comes from publicity, Its easier to get noticed on the mainland because theres more people, more businesses interested in advertising, and probably more people at drift events, (especialy stuff like the D1)
I figure because of these reasons you hawaiian guys would love to get a chance to come out here a participate. Remember the senario was if some big group put it on. Maybe an option type thing, or the guys who are doing filming here locally. Remember i brought up this idea before.
I have no doubts you are highly skilled. none at all , Your probably more skilled then most California guys because you have been at it longer. no one is trying to put you guys down. I think the guy who started this thread would just think it cool for your best guys and some of our best guys to get together and have fun.
Anyways thats what i was thinking. No need for bitterness.Comment

Really? I know a few guys run stickers for local companies (aka Monks, Sonics, SpeedGear), but I dunno much about what they are getting in return. Do we have any big name Sponsored guys out here? I know a few guys were going for Kuhmo Tires, but not too sure what happened with that ...
I can't speak for everyone in Hawaii, but I know I'm not bitter about anything. Sorry if I came across like that. Right now I'm more concerned with practicing and having fun, and thats about it. I didnt see any interviews where mainland guys claimed to be the best in the USA either. But what I did read was some of the articles in certain mags and that is the type of feeling I get after reading the coverage of the mainland events. Probably just the result of media hyping things up.Comment

yes *Censored**Censored**Censored**Censored*enfast is from hawaii. the only drifter from hawaii that i can think of that got his name out there would be billy. its because he was featured in the dvd "Inertia." i know of some guys that are bad a$$ from oahu. also a few people from maui. drift scene in maui is growing but, if you been here theres really no place to go drifting. our track on maui sucks a$$ and they don't hold any drifting events. but there is some pretty mean touge runs. anyone been to maui and went to hana? the road is kinda narrow but it looks like fun to me....Comment

1. Hawaiian is an ethnicity. Just because someone is from Hawaii does not make them Hawaiian. They're just "from Hawaii." So don't just throw that term around.
2. Most people here need to learn how to type. Too many of the responses were difficult to read because of it.

Drifting in Hawaii and Drifting in Cali are two totally different animals. Drifting in Cali is more about D1 style, and giving the impression that the drivers are rock stars. Drifting in Hawaii is more low key, that the drivers are just like everyone else and are approachable. It's like D1 and Ikaten. Regardless if it's true or not that Cali drivers who compete in D1, or Cali drivers in general, think they're the best in the country, is irrelevant. It's the impression that is given and that is what people will believe. There isn't much to dispel that belief if at all. The media works in such a way. For example: In General who knows who Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Jeff Gordon are? Ok, now how many people know who Michael Schumacher, Kimi Raikkonen, and Juan Pablo Montoya are? (given that this is an automotive forum it might not be a fair question).
Unfortunately, here in Hawaii it'd be difficult to have D1 run an event. In my opinion, we just do not have adequate facilities for it. Sure our track is ok, but it definately would not suit a D1 competition.
Last thought: The drift culture here in the US grew just way to damn fast. There was not time for it to mature and because of that, the public in general just will not accept it as a legitimate motor sport.Comment
