you want to get into drifting right?...well i see you don't have friends that drift or are into it...
if you dont want to get a RWD car or "attempt" to drift with what you have...go rent gt3...win a few races or get a gameshark get a nissan 240sx leave the engine stock, go for suspension and drivetrain and then come online seriously look at how to drift and attempt...
if you cant do it in the game, either you suck at the game or dont understand the (?)"physics"(?) or shall i say "way of drift" OR...you know how to but are un-capable of doing so
im not saying the game is anywhere compared to real driving but still its close as hell...and if i didnt have legs..it's what i'd do all my life...
anyway...also on that note...one of the Top drifters say pick Tsuchiya....plays gt3 i doubt he'd do that great...now i don't know i might be totally wrong lol, he's probably the best drifter and the best video game player who the hell knows right?...
but since he is tsuchiya..i guess give him a couple minutes with the game he'd probably get the hang of it??!

Well here's the way I see it. America is not trying to re-invent drifting. Its all a matter of getting leagues going, and getting the the real mainland US roadracing tracks to give it a chance. Up until now, all the events at the good mainland US roadracing tracks have been grip events. So thats pretty much the only type of events those track officials are used to seeing. Then you have these crazy guys come down from another country and introduce this new sport that seems dangereous to them because it involves a loss of traction. None of the regular grip guys wanna give it a try because they think its a waste of time or it does not appeal to them. So that means the majority of the people attending these events are amatures still in the grass roots stage, where they practice their skills, but thats not their profession (yet). Unless these guys have been participating in grip events and the track officials know who they are, they will be wary of letting the person loose on their facilities. Now compare it to Japan where not only has the sport been going on for over 10 years, with professional leages, etc, also factor in that a lot of the drifters were/are also professional grip drivers. I'd imagine from the track official point of view, you would be more likely to host a different type of event if the regulars were going to be the ones participating or you had confidence in the event venue because the drivers have a good reputation. So IMO its just gonna take some time for the mainland US track officials to decide if they wanna give it a try. But the USA is making progress. Formula D will be having an event at Laguna Seca, and thats a step forward in my opinion. I've talked with someone at Slipstream and let him know I thought that they were going in the right direction. He agree'd, so my prediction is that Formula D will be the league that brings drifting to alot of the roadracing type tracks that have only hosted grip event, and sort of break the ice.
As for the whole drifting on the street thing ... I say people are going to do what they want to do nomatter what anyone says. Its dangereous anywhere you do it (Japan and USA) since there are probably unsuspecting drivers that might be involved. Just watched JDM Insider 2 and on one of the street drifting clips, the driver almost hits someone sitting at a light while drifting an intersection. Maybe 1-3 inches away from a collision. Close call! People just gotta know their limits and remember there is a time and place for everything.

Boy I love this "America sucks Japan rules stuff". Everybody thinks America is some big empire trying to suck drifting dry. What do you think D1 is in Japan and all those Option vids you guys love? Option makes money off of both yet you don't get mad at them. Lemme see HKS sponsors N.O.B. and Blitz sponsors Nomuken and that rocks. But Pontiac sponsors RHYS (who chose the GTO and not the other way around) and APC sponsors Team Orange and suddenly that's selling out. And the people booing Rhys? That's ridiculous, I mean what ever happened to pride in your own country. Now I know Detroit hasn't had the best quality, but that doesn't mean their cars suck, especially in the hands of an experienced hotrodder. GTR's make 1300hp you say. Guess what so can an LS6, LT1 or 351W when you build it with the right turbo. As far as "Japan has cooler stuff" just remember, the gas prices are sky high, toll roads everywhere, and the economy is struggling. Not to mention you'd be going to school for 12 hours a day. America has it's faults, but don't kid yourself. We've got the cheapest gas prices in the country with access to more road courses than any country in the world. Our military is the finest in the world. No country is better protected than ours. Just realize how good you have it here. I'm sure more than one Japanese kid is sitting at home thinking to himself, "man I wish I had a Z06."

MAN!!!!!! YOU HIT IT ON THE FRACKING SPOT!!!!! good job man, you to CrazyHawaiian. great posts each of you. but I belive drifting wasn't invented by japan, it was sort of stumbled upon kinda like America was invented. it has just been a natrual response to want to push the limits of thing. and seeing a car slide for the first time can be exciting and can add a little bit of action to a show. don't belive me? go watch a couple of episodes of Dukes of Hazzard. they slid that Charger around ever episode. so every country has been sliding cars, just because the Japanese invented the D1GP and Option, they suddenly get all the credit for "inventing" drifting. I laugh at the people who belive japan "invented" it. as someone said earlier, it was first done in rally racing and early stunt drivers and it just derived from there.

I thought it was sooooo freakin awesome to have the professional rally driver, Rhys Millen himself, piloting the brand new Pontiac GTO in the D1GP. that must have been awesome. and I saw clips of Tarzan drifting his Viper race car, I crapped my pants man, it was great and the sound was out of this world.

Indeed, exactly what i was trying to say Tsunami, i do indeed love my country but i am not always pleased with it, In fact i am very upset at alot of what its done recently.. a subject for a political debate, but not for this site... However these critizisms are not valid. I dont see how "america is just in it for the money" but not Option or anyone else. One arguement was "The guys who put on the D1..." those are japanese guys!! common, the Americans and the Japanese are both capitalist, were out to make a buck and improve our selves, this isnt a evil thing. the idea that those evil americans are changing drifting and trying to put it to circle tracks so they can crame in more viewers.. thats ridiculous. Irwindale didnt choose the d1, the d1 chose irwindale, like was mentioned before it was probably one of the one tracks that would take a chance. Also it has a double oval design with a good infield, which is alot better then a straight oval for anything like this. Also dispite the fact most guys on here arent big nascar fans.. im not the biggest fan, but i do enjoy watching it with my grandfather... many of the japanese drivers that i've read or seen interviews with have mentioned they would love to run a oval, and show off drifting here at a nascar type environment. Maybe not nessisarly drift a mile long oval but you get the idea.
And you know what, if Drifting in America does evolve into something alittle different from Japan, thats alright too. Trust me Southern Californian drifters, and Hawaiian drifters probably have very different styles. Because our roads and tracks are different. And im sure the japanese are even more so different. With the hawaiian styles being more similar to the japanese. And theres not many east coast and midwest guys, but im sure they have a very different style too. Thats alright. Its alright alright if during American drifting series theres a irwindale type track, or a big f1 style road race track, or a tight go cart or solo type track (buttonwillow has one like this) the differences are cool, it makes it more interesting.
I wouldnt want it to go to full oval type tracks. being at irwindale the runs seemed way to short, about 30 seconds each. Though it was very fast paced and very fun to watch, i would prefer a longer run to see the drivers skills alittle better. But alittle of that is fine.
Honestly though, if you want that hardcore japanese style then do it. Practice the way they do, use the styling and performance mods they do. Its all cool.

Dispite where he was born hes an american citizen and lives in america, And yes they were booing because he was from america and driving an american car. Its not like they have something against New Zealanders.. really it was because of the GTO, it embodied all things alot of japanese car fans dislike about American cars.
One... its from America.. some kids have a problem with that. i think its dumb.
Two, its named after an old muscle car. Dont know why thats a problem but somewere along the line someone claimed that imported car fans dont like muscle car fans, and vice versa.. i dont get it, im a big Mustang fan personally.
Three, huge engine. I like my displacement as long as it doesnt affect handling, but because most imports have small engines, someone desided that we should hate big motors..
Four, Big displacement, only okay performance.. Honestly anything under 14 seconds is pretty damn good. But guys see that giant engine and realize the thing doesnt keep up with the STI they blame poor american engineering (really its the weight at fault not the motor)
Five, Weight.. I Admit it, i dont like the weight it was my complant about the car when i first heard of its weight.
Six, handling? im not real sure on its handling numbers, probably good for its weight, but the fact is pushing 4000 pounds, its hard to make it handle like a miata. im more of a small car good handling guy, but the GTO is susposed to be a muscle car. muscle cars dont need to handle.
Seven.. dont know if they goes for everyone, but its my personal complant. Its expensive, and i feel designed for well off older guys who want to feel young again by buying that muscle car they never had a chance to. Instead of being a traditional balls to the walls performance car like older muscle cars where.
Okay most of those are unfair and just stupid ricer "import vs domestic" *Censored**Censored**Censored**Censored**Censored* *Censored**Censored**Censored*, there is a few legitiment complans up there.. but can anyone say those dont hold true for the skyline sedan people cheered for? It was pretty rude to boo rhys and pontiac in general. If you have a complaint may i sugest talking to the guys from pontiac.. especialy at the D1 they had open pits ,im sure you could of politely and respectfully told them how you would like to see there drift program continue in the future.
anyways like we've said before, there were over 10 thousand people there, there are not 10 thousand drifters in california, so most were general import fans, and they can be dumb sometimes.. im soooooo glad we dont have that crap here. we have guys who drive nissans and chevys and its all cool. I really respect crazyhawaiian, hell my first post was in response to something he said, He always has good informative post and seems very open minded. He drives a camaro. I drive a import and to make maters worse grew up around mustangs, my dads a big ford guy. But theres no hate there unlike most places.
<b>
If thats what Drifting is doing in America, bringing people who traditionally "dont like each other", bringing them together to talk about cars and have a good time, then i dont see how it can be wrong.

very very very good post man. I agree with all that is said. and I grew liking muscle cars myself. I have a spot in me for them still. the only 2 things I don't like aboot muscle cars is the weight and most of the pighead jerks who own them who say imports are crap. I know all domestic owners aren't like that, it is just those few arseholes who screw it up, same in the import scene.
I myself coming from a muscle car background belive domestics and imports are equally as good. just they are good at diffrent things. domestics will be faster in the quarter mile most of the time and imports will be better in places where handeling is needed. it just depends on if you like straight line acceleration, or if you like to turn.
and thats pretty crappy those fools booing Rhys Millen because he was an american driver driving a GTO. I can gaurantee ALL of those people who were booing him because he is american and he was driving an american car, they 1)can't drift themselves, 2) owned a honda w/a body kit or other various crap cars, and 3) never even heard about drifting and they only went because drifting is the popular thing to do at the moment.
rock.

Yeah, you know i always say drifting is a personal thing, so you choose your weapon. It should reflect you and what you want. We have guys here with domestic cars that can turn, and guys here with imports that can run. Its all cool. Cars are great that way, with modifications you can make them do nearly anything.

As for the D1 being at Irwindale...and if that is a sign of drifting being pushed in that direction...of really high speeds and super long drifts. I think it is the Japanese who are pushing it in that direction. After reading part of a recent interview done by BMI with Tsuchiya (it is a feature on the Super Street site), I think it is the Japanese who are pushing drifting in this direction. He said himself that he felt that future of Japanese drifting (or at least D1) was going to be more dangerous, more high speed drifting. I think they want to push it in that direction. I think they want to see how far they can take it.
Honestly I think it is going to be really sick to see where drifting on an international level is going to be...say 20 years from now. It would be interesting if it evolved into like the FIA International Drift Championship or something. With factory prototype drift cars, and GT based drift cars, with factory sponsored drivers. I'm really curious to see how far this thing can be pushed, and I think that is what the Japanese are trying to do right now. And bringing the D1 to America on a crazy oval is just them trying figure out how to go about it. Eventhough drifting has been around for a little while...especially in Japan. It is still relatively young and has just hit a major growth spurt. Everything is a little awkward now, and it is hard to control everything. But I think, that the major powers of drifting that be, will get it all figured out. And once they do...who knows where the limit is?
