humm..whats the point...well you should let them know, although the may not grasp the concept, that drifting is an extension to normal grip racing, where the driver tests the blance and power of a vehicle and most importantly their own driving skills. As you may know, or may not, drifting stems from the touge and the racing curcuit. Many of the techniques and knowledge used to drift were taken from curcuit racing(racing techinques), i.e. hill to toe, weight shifting, braking..etc. If that leaves them scratching their heads, just go back to the the obvious answer, people do it for entertainment and the challenge (from fun as everyone has stated).

hell yeah! lol
but yeah,
if youre a drifter, you know that you drift to live
I am a big fan of rally racing, and while playing a round of Colin Mcrae Rally 3 my girlfriend made fun of the co driver by just saying "left , right, right, straight, left..."
It was nothing to her, but I know how you feel. I started thinking "what's the point' I turn the wheel left when told by the co-driver, right when ordered on the next turn.
Then I thought about all sports and how they are just one constant loop of doing the same damn thing over and over
Then I thought about my actions at work, and all of a sudden I was that guy in Office Space. I didn't want to go to work, I just wanted to do nothing with my life cause it seemed pointless and repetitive.
Then I had a beer.
The moral of this story is this. Logically nothing makes snese, but that is why we have the brain power to work out and understand emotions. Drifting to some is happiness. It's the smile on your face when you FINALLY get it right. To your girlfriend, who might find happiness in a beautifully decorated house, it made no sense, but then again she doesn't understand why you roll your eyes to HGTV.
The point of drifting is to smile. Sponsors just allow us to do it more times a year, and fans just allow us to do it with friends, but in the end it's always has been and will be about drivers having fun.
what's the point in putting a tranny in my jetta? "It's just an old jetta" "why do you waste money on that thing?" ( I roasted the old tranny breaking traction at the top of 2nd coming out of a corner. Oops.)
What's the point in building another GTI? Didn't I learn when I put my old one in the woods? What am I, an idiot?
If you look at it from the perspective of a higher-up, there's no point in anything we do. We exist as if Earth is some sort of bizzare hive-world. We provide labor for the factories, votes for leaders, and bodies for war. That is all the world expects of us, and if that's good enough for you then I suggest you sell your car and start taking the bus straight to your double shifts at the nearest low-paying place of employment.
Some people have religion...some people politics, some money, some sex, some cocaine, some rock and roll, some poetry, some photography, some alcohol, some television or video games. Whatever it is, everyone has something that they do, something that they can point to and say "this is me, this is what I am". For most of us here, that thing is cars and driving them.
The point of driving, and drifting, isn't going fast, or looking good, or being skillfull. The point is that it's a release. It's something to focus on that is actually demanding off the mental and emotional force that even the dullest and most mundane human can command. Driving is who and what we are, and without it we are just one more lost person with an econobox and a bad case of roadrage, someone who's angry and they don't know why when the reason is right in front of them. They have nothing to live for.
this is getting so deep... but what s13_Steve said... of course its all about getting the girls... they come running to me because i have a corolla... i cant keep them away hahahaha
yeah...drifting is a lifestyle...is like asking, "whats the meaning of life?"..the point of drifting is to drift...some people run, some people jump...we drift...nuff said
There's no denying that it looks like fun... and that the girls are hot But what about from a spectators perspective??
I was just watching some drifting on TV. I could appreciate the skill and beauty of putting a car sideways round every corner, but as a spectator it left me wondering exactly the same thing... what is the point?
As a new sport, all we have to compare it to is the other more well known motor racing sports such as F1, Rally, Drag, Touring, V8's etc. In virtually every single other motor sport I could think of "The Point" is to be first (or fastest) across the line. But this does not seem to be the aim of drifting.
So then, what is the point of drifting? I think the question could also be asked, how do you win in drifting?
Having watched a little on TV, I started to get the impression that maybe it's scored similarly to surfing, where points are awarded for style and tricks rather than being first across the line (because there is no line).
Maybe one of the many drifting enthusiasts here could enlighten all of us spectators so we can appreciate your sport even more!
