  • 240sx owners, what would you do differently?

i drive a 2003 WRX as of now but im looking to buy a RWD car to have some fun in. i have decided to buy a 91 240sx fastback. When it comes to modifications on my WRX if i could go back and do it all over i would definatly do things differently. So i ask you, if you could go back and "mod" your car again what would you do differently, were there upgrades that didnt really do anything or that just gave you a big headache? i wanna know cause i am syched about this new car and i just want things to go smoothly.

    thanks alot,

    adam

what do you want to do with your car? Drift hardcore, daily driver, autox, drag? It all depends. When i had my S13, first thing i did was get coilovers because I wanted to look good, and it did. But if I were to do it over again, I would have gotten some cheap *Censored**Censored**Censored* tein springs, and got a Nismo LSD. That would have been perfect for drifting, and thats what I try to do. Then I would have worked on getting coilovers and wheels. I was glad that I got a bucket seat though, it made drifting much easier once I learned how to do it with an open diff. That would be my third mod if I were to do it over again. LSD first though, for sure.

If you are worried about daily driving, then springs/shocks or coilovers would be first, then some nice wheels and maybe a vlsd later on.

If drag, then an turbo/engine swap and slicks.

      what I would do

hey man I don't own a car but I am hoping to get a 1993 240sx hatchback but if its for drifting I would get a hang of the car first witch you should do with any type of format drifting, auto cross, rally, drag, ect. then I would screw around with the suspention check out tanabe they have some good stuff I hear in terms of suspention then I would get some good drifting tires and then some bucket seats.

well i have a WRX as of now, a 2003, but im looking to sell it cause its just too much cash and for the $ i paid for the WRX i could build a nissan that wipes the floor with STI's

so ill be needing it to be a daily driver but i will be drifting it every chance i get. well almost every chance i get. one thing i am certian on doing is swaping in a blacktop sr20 once the stock engine blows up.

there is one thing im confused about, racingpanda you said you would have rather bought cheap springs rather than buying coilovers first off then work to buy coilovers and wheels. that doesnt make alot of sense. i mean if your gonna buy coilovers anyways why spend the cash on tein springs?

anyways thanks for the input and keep it comming.

also my knowledge of nissans is very little but this is what im thinking of doing to my car, please if this doesnt make sense for drifing please please let me know

        1. 91' black 240sx fastback
        2. coilovers
        3. turboback, well full 3" exhaust
        4. lsd
        5. wheels and tires
        6. exedy clutch, maybe still deciding on what company
        7. sr20 blacktop
        6. FMIC
        7. turbotimer, boost controller and guage
        8. new front bumper, maybe side skirt and rear skirt
        9. koyo raidiator

        any other suggestions?

reconsider on you swap. and the suspension pieces alone will set you back a good amount. start there.

i'd say get coils first. then lsd. and then work the rest of your suspension. that should keep you poor for at least a year. lol.

then turbo the KA motor cause dammit..... torque is nice when youre drifting.

see this is what i dont get, you guys are telling me to get coils before coilovers, why? if im gonna buy them anyways why buy springs. ill be spending more in the long run that way.

so youd rather slap a turbo on the stock motor than swap in the already turbo charged sr20? you also say torque is nice when drifting, and i totally agree but wont you have turbo lag if you install a turbo?

there is also no way i will drive a non turbo charged car, i mean i love turbos too much to ever give them up. boost is mans best friend. and BOV's are soo great.

so this is how i should start, take in account ill have around 18-20 grand in my bank account after i sell the WRX:

            1. coilovers
            2. strut and sway bars
            3. lsd
            4. wheels and tires

im just saying coils instead of typing "coilovers".

just because the sr20 has turbo already doesnt mean that it doesnt have turbo lag. no matter what motor you got a turbo on, you'll have some lag.

and remember, turbo lag is only a downshift away...

If i had to do things differently deffenately will hit the oil changes up every 3 thousand miles with probably a thicker weight oil.

yeah u definately want to keep your engines vital fluids fresh and clean. oil changes are very important. my ex. g/f's car is sitting dead in the street cuz her mom melted a piston by not replacing the oil.

                    1. LSD
                    2. COILOVERS
                    3. SWAY/STRUT BARS
                    4. TURBO KA
                    5. I/H/E

then youll be golden, or just have less gold 'n' the bank.

                    lol.

wtf whipe the floor with sti? that is just stupid man u sound like a drag racer more than a drifter to me....keep ur wrx cuz we dont need that attitude..ur car is a great car with awd capabilities...u switch from a awd to rwd than ur in for some handling suprises..doesnt matter if u have a sr20..i bet some guys will whipe ur sr powered 240 with a e engine..dont be stupid and think ur engine is gonna help u..start with ur suspension first with sway bars struts nice coilover..i say coilover..not those cheap pos sleeve overs on ebay...cuz whats the use of a sr20 car if u cant make it handle like its meant to be..all my cars started from the bottom of the chassis to interioir roll bars then bigger engine..and yes i know what im talkin about ive done the same build up with all my cars..suspension and tensioning first then the big stuff..trust me u will be happy to make ur car last through winter handling like a demon than a demon that cannot be handled...

i've never driven an awd car that had a good suspension on it. with that being said, those cars turn funny. i mean i have an FF car and a FR car. but when i drove this STi around a corner, it didnt react like how i wanted. idunno it was just weird.

but the awd launch is awesome. hehe. just floor it and pop the clutch. i like that feeling. *sigh*. one day i'll afford an sti. hehe

what i was saying was for the money an STI cost i could build a 240 that would kill it. a few of my WRX buddies have STI's and they arent that fast. my dad is an exotic car dealer so ive driven alot of incredibly fast cars, the STI isnt that fast. way overpriced. i also like how you speak for all drifter when you say, "we dont need that attitude." I thought i could express my thoughts, i guess not. also whats wrong with a "drifter" saying they would beat a car? dont lie to yourself and say you dont race a car now and then, we all do. well most of us anyways.

FYI, mitsubishi sends rep's down to drag strips and hunts out people that drive the EVO like that, these kids rev it up to 7k drop the clutch and blow their engines. not only do they not break it in but they dont understand that they cant spin the tires in an all wheel drive car. anyways these kids then go to the dealer and say, "hey your car sucks it broke down on me, what the hell?" so to insure this doesnt happen mitsubushi finds these kids, writes the vin # down and when they come in for new engine and/or tranny they can refuse them because of their driving habbits. what does that say about mitsubushi?

where have you heard this? cause this sounds like complete garbage. i've never heard of any company doing this. regardless of driving habit its still under warranty. i've never read an agreement where it stated you cant drive the car hard.

and you can spin all the tires in a awd car.

yea you can spin the tires if you have a whole lot of hp and not alot of weight, and when i was taking a test drive the dealer told me about the reps going to the tracks.
