I want a jz80 supra but i think they are to heavy for drifting but they still have alot of horses under the hood so i was thinking about getting a a70 supra and putting in a 2jzgte motor in it.
any suggestions.....
An A70 is a great car to start drifting in. Tons of aftermarket parts for the GTE. But I would like to see alot more suspension parts avalible. But thier are suspension parts being fabricated for the A70 as we speak so keep your eyes out for an update.
The only problem with the A70 is It likes to correct it self while in a drift. But that can be taken care of just by kickin' the clutch. You need alot of seat time in the supra. these are heavy cars which like to spin out. As long as you get the feel of when the car is going to spin out just counter and clutch kick or accel depending on how fast the rear wants to come around.
My basic set up for drifting is Sway bars in the rear, don't set the stiffness too high. I distroyed my rear link. so the softest setting is just fine. Im not sure how much neg. camber I have in the rear. I havn't gotten around to measureing it. Im running tokico hp blues, and eibach lowering springs. I fooled around with the settings on my supra. removeing the rear sway bars keeps the vehicle from sliding. removeing the front sway bar gets rid of under steer. It grips like crazy. cornering is alot better.
The 7MGTE is a well enough motor for drifting. But swaping to a 1JZ, 2JZ, really dosent matter unless its just for performance and looks then go for it!
The 2Jz is well known for being a bullet proof motor "BPU" is all you need for drifting with that motor.

It really depends on condition. You can get N/A's with high miles for less than a grand, but a good condition turbo model can go for $6k.
You can get a 7M-GTE clip for around $2k or just the motor for around $1000. There are some really good tech articles about head gasket failure for the 7M and how to easily and cheaply fix it.
I've heard conflicting things about the 1JZ swap - how hard is it?

On the East Coast, car part prices are a lot higher - I'd still pay $1k for a GTE when (and if) I get a Spura, but the less money the better.
How much would you say you have invested in the Supra so far including purchase price?

I haven't replaced any bushings due to drifting it. But the drive shaft bushing I replaced thats the weakest part that needs replacement most of the time. But a one piece carbon drive shaft will keep that problem from ariseing.
Well I've spent roughly 5000 total incl. purchase price. not counting crashes, tyrannys, BHG, and LSD. 3000 realistic price.
You can put together an A70 drift supra for much less then I have. Take note I've had my car for 5 to 6 years. So Ive been through alot of problems.
Supras are Toyotas, so I wouldn't think that a lot of stuff would go wrong as long as regular maintenance is maintained.
Other than the universal good advice for buying an old car (leaks, damage, etc) and the head gasket issue, is there anything Supra-specific that we should all know?

I own a MK3....and am rebuilding the motor as we speak. I am getting it machined on tuesday...and taking it to my newfound local supra shop ( 3rd shirt performance, soon to have a web site!) and a guy named Erin is building it up for me, he has built LOTS of 7m's and i mean LOTS.
i love the handling of the car, very easy and nimble for 3400 lbs! to be quite honest, i think its a well suited drifter...people just over look it becuase of its "heft" so to speak.
just find one and drive it...you will love it or hate it. I loved it...
the turbo is what got me
then the HG blew ( kinda a miracle, i am rebuilding the whole car, all new parts)
its slow right now in the making, i am just waiting for next tuesday my day off and take the motor to the shop.
I also ordered some Toms' C7R wheels from japan on ebay...then its time for suspension....
i just want about 350hp...just enough to have a good kick on the interstate and enough power to power out of a turn sideways!
If you want big horse power for easy I suggest a 1jz..but it's not for everyone. If you do get one a few simple bolt-ons and 400 is easy to get to. A 1jz does help alot with getting slideways through a turn. I think I like drifting my A70 better then my 240, it just seems smoother. I think it is because of all the wieght, you seem to get less snap and you don't have to oversteer as much. Also I thought this was the pix/vids section...shouldn't this be in general/tech? just wondering
