Fords, Chevys, Pontiacs and Dodges have the same potential just as any other car does. Hell, why do people consider most imports to be Japanese?? European cars exist too and they have just as much potential as the others do. Its not a matter of what brand of car someone drives, its how the car is driven.
Personally I'd love to see more of our domestics out there challenging the imports. But only time will tell...

American cars have the balls but they dont handle they are set up for a straight line, leave the turns to the real drifters.

You obviously know nothing about automobiles or you just don’t want to accept anything you hear. American cars are set up NOT to handle???? Good lord man, where have you been for the last 20 years? American car’s have come along way since the fall of the early 70’s Muscle Car. Yes, they actually handle now. Some even handle better than “gasp” your beloved Japanese cars. Oh the horror!!!! Don’t believe me, well let’s take a look at how a few of the good ol American car’s stack up to the 240 since we can all agree that it is probably the main example of a car that "Real Drifters" would tackle corners in.

The 240sx pulls .89g on the skidpad, the SE pulls .82. Pretty impressive numbers but wait, let’s look at the Americans.

We’ll start out with the newest. The 2005 Mustang pulls .85G. Not too shabby.
The 1989 pulls .85. Same number, so things haven’t changed that much in 16 years.
Now let’s look at a Saleen. The 1990 Saleen SC pulls .91 G’s on the skidpad. Not too sure about you, but that’s pretty “Handling to me”. But let’s not stop there. How bout the Corvette, the bastion of American muscle and performance. The 1990 standard Corvette pulls .90g and the 1995 ZR1 pulls .95. I won’t even get into the Viper because, well we all know that thing can’t handle.


So in retrospect, I think you have no idea what you are talking about and just typed that to be part of the crowd. You really should open your eyes and not hate on the vehicles that are your Domestics. Like I said, we look really stupid hating on our own cars. The only one’s against American car’s in Drifting are the Americans. How lame is that.

Oh and a footnote for all those that say "well America doesn't have a car that makes 100hp per liter stock". Let's look at one goofy looking Dodge Spirit R/T. A boxy little 4 door sedan that came out in 1991, yes 14 years ago. It packed the famous 2.2 litre chrysler engine that came in the turbo dodges of that time. It also made 224 hp at 6000 RPM's AND it pulled .081 on the skidpad in FF configuration. Neato huh?

So people, look around before you make a blanket statement and look ignorant. It's all out there for you to see, you just have to get off your lazy butts and find it. All of these numbers came off of the internet, some magazines may differ some but all in all they are the averages of what I found. Now you tell me Captain Real Drifter, who handles better. Oh and the Skidpad is where they test the amount of lateral acceleration that a car can take before it breaks traction. In case you didn't know that as well.

American cars can be used for drifting. But I prefer drifting japanese cars. Although that 91 hatchback stinger sounds good. But i think i would have to either get one with an aluminum V6 or the 351 5.0. Oh by the way did they make the aluminum V6 in the early 90s

Well, since the 351 ho really never cam out in them, your other choice would be the 6. The 6 would a, be too much more expensive to upgrade than the 302 as the parts are harder to find or either need to be fabbed, B would not be that much lighter of you added aluminum stuff to the 302 and as we discussed ealier, the stang isn't that heavy of a car to begin with so why waste the money.

I saw a nice one in the Auto Trader today, 2600 bucks. Notchback, 1990 model, exhaust and new paint. There you have a much better setup(overall) right out of the box than a 240 for less money. Faster, weighs about the same, super nice torque transfer and pulls right at the same on the skidpad. You can take that car and slide it with no problems.

I may want to add to ghost post, cars in general are handling better these days. in 90 .8G was considered good. Now you can buy cars that are over .95G on the skidpad that can easily be tweek to more. the Evo and Vette are good examples.

No doubt, i think the idea of domestics cant handle come from simply the limited number of domestic sport models. It doesnt help that the new GTO really doesnt handle to well out of the box, although its not to bad, especialy considering its weight.

Another problem tends to be the way people especially enthusiest think. The guy goes "imports handle better" he thinks of the NSX the 300ZX, maybe a built 240, the skyline, the supra, the 350Z the evo the sti the Integra. Then he goes "then domestics" and he thinks of a base model mustang, a minivan, maybe a pickup, a dodge stratus.

Not a far comparison really. Its also true American car manufacturers value acceleration and "muscle" (but not nessisarly performance) over handling, it goes back to the muscle car days. Even so we are left with few domestic sport cars that really handle well. The Higher end Mustangs, Camaros and the corvette... the viper is too expensive for most to consider it. And of course a handful of other super cars. the Shelby Series One, the Molser Photon ect.. come to mind.

so i can deffenately see and understand that stigma... but the fact is, and 'tuners' especialy should understand this, anycar can be made to handle.

To say "domestics cant turn" is as ignorant as saying "Imports cant accelerate" you group cars together like that and you will loose races. Be it on a moutain run, a track, a drag strip, a drift event or anywhere else two cars compete. No enthusiest should ever be that ignorant. Unfortionately its human nature.

I think Mustangs would be the best American drift cars. They are reasonably light, they arent as wide as Vettes and Vipers, they have power, and theyre cheap.

actually, at d1 the more powerful cars are handicapped since they can catch up easier on straights, they can only pass during drifts so ur point really doesn't make sense since it is simply not true... just thought you should know

That's a very good point Scirroco. Also...one of the reasons that D1 came to the US, was in hopes of seeing some American cars in the competition. They want to make a truly international motorsport.

As for this vs that, I am so sick of it. If you are a true car enthusiasts then it shouldn't make any difference to you where a car was built, how old it is, who manufactured it. A sick car is a sick car, regardless of all of that stuff. Sure we all have our preferences about all aspects of the automotive world...but I just don't see how any of it matters. A sick car is a sick car...a sick driver is a sick driver. That's all that matters to me.

I love all sports, racing, and enthusiasts cars. Everything from Bugatti Type 35s, old Alfa GTVs, f bodies, Corvettes, Mustangs, GTRs and Supras, old Skylines. Those old Dusenbergs were fast as hell and beautiful. The Mazda 787B, Toyota GTOne, The Trans Am cars of the 60s (regardless of displacent), Bentley Speed 8, Ferrari F2000-F2004. I could in all honestly list cars for days. I love them, they have been an important part of my life since day one. There are pictures of me sitting on my Uncle's and Dad's Corvettes when I was a newborn. I love cars so it is hard for me to understand these arguments. But, to each their own.
