Suberi..do I know you? I founded NIGHTgarage like years ago..back here in Hawaii. There's only one other NIGHTgarage I know and it's in Japan. We had links to each other. Just curious. Oh, and people there is stuff like that being filmed..just ask any of the drivers that we've been following around and doing candid's with like everywhere. Maybe you should pick up Drift Society..Volume 2 is in the works as well. Grip also follows teams in the US and Japan. We were doing it way before it went to TV..so I hope some of you don't forget what we helped the sport to achieve. I know Alex has my back on this one..we've always kept it real...TV or not.
I think if history remembers anyone as the main people that propelled the sport from it's early arrival into America, it will be the Hawaiians. I know I will.
I think alot of what made drifting today here in the US are the ae86 drivers and club4ag, didnt matter too much if you where in hawaii, west coast, east coast. We all would show up at the track events no matter the cost because we just loved to run. I remember the first drifting events had 75% ae86 and the 240's where like the red headed step child. The sr20 motor was a myth. Threw the years, all the same drivers are still here (you know who you are) and have built up this thing we call drifting from the grassroots, just the 240 population has grown.
I like to see drifting on TV. I really got tired of explaining to people what we do. "you drive sideways?" That and as Ghost has explained, you want all the good stuff but its going to come with some bad, i'm not exactly happy that drifting has moved away for its hard core roots, but things change, there are more opertunities for us now, i like the fact that there are places for people to run legaly in the major cities, drifting has become more accepted and its good to see alot of new happy faces at the events.
Now what I'd really like to see happen, is in 5 years for the sport compact comunity move from drifting and progress back into racing, build up our racing communities back to how strong they where in the 70's and 80's when sports cars ruled. JGTC coming to america is a big step.
I know I talk about how I feel that certian commercialization has had a negative impact on drifting, and I stand by that, but this is only certian commercialization. If it is at all possible for drifting to be brought to a wider audiance that is utterly fantastic. However, "no press is bad press" does not nescesarily apply - I am thrilled that there is a space on redline for drifting, but as long as the portrayal of the sport is one of a skilled driving activity where one can learn a tremendous amount about car control and tech, rather than one of the new trendy wa to break the law with thousands of dollars worth of useless parts, it will all be kosher IMO.
Talk of rigged or pre-determined events and spuer-high dollar entries into the D1 and Formula D are what woes me. How many people are really going to want to get involved in a sport that either has pre-determined winner or requires $50,000 worth of machine to compete
This is why I always try to emphasize the grassroots events. It seems that there are at least 4 or 5 events a month between drift showoffs, DDay's, DGtrials events, and any other miscelaneous groups out there. I know that Redline can't be everywhere or that they can afford to devote the whole segment to drifting and I don't expect them to. However, I would expect coverage of accessable events to expand fanbase more than these high-dollar events, or at least show people that they can get involved for very little money.
I'm glad that nobody has really focused on street drifting or US touge - this isn't somehting that should be shown to everyone just yet (if ever). The people who are involved at this stage are well aware of the consequences of such activities and have been responsible, for the most part, to ensure as much safety as possible in such an environment (and yes, I'm aware of the contradiction in terms). There are people destroying their cars and getting hurt out in CA on almost a weekly basis as it is; if street drifting and touge were to hit the TV screens across the US it could spell disaster...
Now what I'd really like to see happen, is in 5 years for the sport compact comunity move from drifting and progress back into racing, build up our racing communities back to how strong they where in the 70's and 80's when sports cars ruled. JGTC coming to america is a big step.
I whole heartedly agree, but in a road racing fasion. There are so many drag strips if there were only half the amount of affordable venues for auto cross I think that a strong racing community would be possible.
Great Show
The information was good and nothing was too flashy. I like the way that they followed the driver through the process of car build up, would be great if they did it with other drivers.
benjo;
I honestly don't know what the plans are for Redline for 2004. This year, we were able to procure JGTC coverage without a giant expenditure. If JGTC follows the precedent set by other "hot properties," it will almost certainly mean a stand alone show or programming sold to the highest bidder. For this reason, we are paying close attention.
Personally, I believe expanded JGTC coverage should be a focus of the programming next year.
Beyond that, I know one hour shows are very expensive to produce and I don't see that happening.
Beyond even that, I don't think drifting can support a full hour or even half hour of dedicated coverage. Why? The audience is too small and even mainstream audiences will get sick of seeing the same dozen guys week after week....unless the events grow in attendance and participation from Japanese drivers, I don't see that happening anytime soon.
I'm not sure focusing week after week and what drifting is and how to do it would be successful outside our core group of drift fans which again, is only a fraction of the overall audience size.
I'm getting the impression that coverage of drifting should be stepped up a bit and that some consideration should be given to doing a budget buildup, especially one that focuses on suspension setups. I think this type of coverage, mixed with more in depth profiles of where the sport came from, background on touge in Japan and the importation to America through Hawaii are really interesting elements we should profile.
Again, this assumes a lot and I'm just a member of a production team...but this is where my mind is at today, and a great deal of this is coming from feedback from Ghost, NissanGuy, Spock and others, so please keep it coming.
And again, for the record, I really did enjoy Rides and called Hideo to congratulate him and Toshi on a job well done. Alex" You're getting to be a super star, man! Can I have your autograph?

Well either be frank with it or dont mention it at all. I dont want to see the facts soften to something like "It started on the hills along time ago but now everyone uses tracks and all is right in the world"
i know i'm real late but i too thought it was a great show. i was glued to the computer screen every second of it. the problem with redline tv is they try to make it too flashy. just capture the footage and don't put any car show like editing in it.
heres a good example. take a picture of two cars. one car is stock and the other car is a race-prepped drift car. if taken at the same angle, same lighting, the race-prepped car will look like a better picture because it looks better than the stock car. it will flashy enough to make it it look good. what redline tv is trying to do is taking that that same drift car picture and making it look too flashy
so when i leave the country, the good shows start... man, someone PLZ post a link to a download, from trhe feedback, i absolutley NEEd to see this, please someone, with or without commercials, i dont care, jsut post a link, dont care about the file size either, just want to see this~!
