I like the idea of "street legal only" competitions. I'd also liek to see less media and sponsors and all that other crap. We've all been through this before.

The media is cool, but its taking drifting as a whole in the wrong direction.

It's getting bad, and I know this because there are dumbasses out there that think you have to have a body kit and super performance everything and stickers all over your car, to be aloud to drift.

Before, (actually only bout a couple months ago) I thought, hmmm what mods can I do to my car to make it cool? (aka Rice) What kind of engine tuning can I do to get more horse power out of my engine... but thats the great thing about drifting that most people seem to look past. YOU DONT NEED 100000 Horses to have a drift car. Due to the corporate take over of drifting from the the rapid growth spert the same thing is happening that happened in the days of street draging. Rice.. and people that act like ricers.

I work hard. Why do I work? For my car. Every bit of money I make goes into my car. Its my passion, my heart, my soul. I love my car. I don't know if its just me but to see people with sponsors and people with cars that are backed by huge companies just makes me feel like they cheated. Do I hate people like them.. no of course not.

There's one thing about this sport that I absolutly love. And its about the only defence drifting has on any other sport. It doesn't matter how much money you throw into the car, It all comes down to the driver.

^ That had nothing to do with the first post, but thats my 2 cents on the conversation.

Ghost-We are working on it... The only problem is we are geographically challenged but we are trying are best to provide drifitng nationwide for drifters.

Here are some areas we are working on for 2005

      Alabama
      Tennesse
      Illinois
      Texas
      Oregon

No offense taken to your previous comment. I have always thought your comments were well thought out and valid....

It will be very interesting to see how this new series plays out. I honestly don't know if bringing in more series to compete is the answer to growing the sport right now. We still need coverage and exposure for what we have. Drifting to most people still means going from town to town as a homeless person.

I still think it is a gamble, after SEMA hopefully there will be more sponsors willing to throw money at the sport, so long as drifting is a hit.
sponsors are gona want their teams to be at every event regaurdless of what series it is, as long as it is a national event. this would mean that teams may have to go to 3 or even 4 events in a month, just to stay competitive. this would make team costs skyrocket, with travel, you would need a full time team.

It is impossible for DA to have events nationwide. Sorry, the founders of DA are not billionaries and cannot afford to spend their entire lives going across the country doing drift events.

But keep in mind that there are other groups besides DA that does local drift events...

yep in the chicago land area there is Clubfr.net we have held already 2 drift events this year and will be holding more next season. We are apart of DA and have helped them with events like RS*R that they brought here. And your right Naoki and moto arn't billionaries so they wont be at all of them. And thats why there is differnt chapters or clubs of DA.

Getting back on topic. This is interesting... I like the idea of the Control Box... But I do have to agree with Ghost unless they make the Control Box long enough to make it safe for both high powered and low powered cars...

I guess we'll just have to see.

Anyone else think drifting is blowing up way too fast?

My guess is none of the primedia mags are going to be covering FD anymore. Companies might see that WDC is getting more exposure and move over to WDC. This might end up hurting FD. For some reason this reminds me of wrestling. Back when WWF and WCW were competing. If there’s one thing we learned from that is that there can only be one major league.

Thanks Naoki. While I have never been to a Drift Day event, I have heard nothing but good things about them. I would be interested in helping with any events that you guys do in the southeast with our resources. Just let me know and SEDA will be glad to help out.

Mav, you are certainly correct. There are ones that do local events. Like ours. www.southeastdrift.com. We are just getting of of the ground and are sorking an SCCA angle, we have already scheduled a fun run at the Dragon and are working on our first event. Check us out.

I think you are right Craftsman, the control box will have to be long enough so that it will easily fit two cars.

If like Ghost said about the lead car having to brake in the box so the follow car can catch up then I think that proves the point of the more powerful cars getting too far ahead for the first corner and it no longer become a drift battle. I am sure the point is not to brake in the box but make sure that the follow car is close behind you as you aproach the box then there wil be no need to brake I guess?

Iv'e said it once, and I'll say it again. We don't need more drifting competitions, we need more drifting venues ie. tracks and weekly practices.

I think we need both, but first we need more of the top drifters competiting in more cities so more people get exposed to this sport and the more local media coverage it will get.

Hopefully after the great media coverage in that city saying how exciting this new sport is someone will be motivated enough to arrange for venues for us to practice so when the WDC comes back maybe we will be good enough to compete and then the headline will read "local hero drifter" beats the top drivers.

                            My 2-cents

Ghost, i think you and others know how i feel about the things you highlighted. Ill give This series a chance, the way i did formula D. but my expectations are not high.

I'm looking forward to the day when the drifting bubble pops, just as a booming economy will eventually correct itself. After that, there will be no more huge, national, commercial competition series, and all that will be left will be autocross-style meets on local go-kart tracks. Of course there could be a national finals, as in SCCA autocross, but the sponsors and bikini shows will be gone and all thats left is small groups of friendly boys and girls out having a good time every once and a while.

I'm just going to wait it out.
