Cut him some slack.
First of all..its not like that was the first crash at Irwindale...way more experienced people than him have hit the wall.
Earlier during the DD33 He had a mishap with the wall and as a result the steering was screwed. So the crew had to leave the track and do a rush job to fix it.
They ended up having to put stock steering knuckles on the car thus..much less angle than usual...and I believe there were problems with the steering column itself.
It showed for the rest of the day he continued to struggle with the car. Once their practice runs were over they quickly replaced the knuckle with a modified part but were not able to notch out the A-arm so the passenger-side front wheel would rub with more more angle he tried to put into it. A veteran probably wouldn't have cared about that..but it wasn't is car so Im sure that situation made him nervous.
The course layout was EXTREMELY difficult and during the drivers meeting after the practice runs there was almost a unanimous vote to change the course layout to the "D1" configuration.
Each driver was then given 5 practice runs.
Before that crash he wasn't doing to bad..but you could tell that he was being conservative ..probably because he was shaken from the crash earlier.
The crash in the video wasn't as bad as it looked and he drove off and lined up again to continue his runs.
I really think that he might have the potential but tonight just wasn't his night.
So he didn't get his license and he is not on the mopar team..they simply have an arrangement for Nick to use the viper as he continues to try and make his way into Formula-D. Chances are we will see him in the pro-am series next year. Hes serious about trying to get better..in fact he has another practice session this week.
Very well put, we know we will see him more and more and look forward to seeing him out at the next event. As long as he keeps doing it he will improve and get to where he wants to be.

I think everyones problem with him, is that hes trying to dive right into formula D, instead of paying his dues, I believe this was his first time driving at an event with other people, if he keeps doing that people will grow to like him because he'll be "one of them." still might haveto ditch SOME of the entourage though...
if somethings going to be given to you, show everyone that you deserve it, Verena has definitely proved herself with her Z, and was doing great today until she got sidelined by the wall.
and for the record, if a certain other youngin had the support nick had, hed long since be rocking formula D, like I hear he rocked the just drift comp today.

Part of it is paying your dues.
I think its very unsafe of anyone to let someone that new at driving onto a track with that powerful of a car.
I say this all the time with the local drivers, you can teach them to drift, but teaching them gut reaction when things go wrong take a very, very long time.
Why be in such a hurry to get out there? Take your time, drive the thing for a few years, rock some practice events (parking lot, road course). Goto some racing schools. You cant do a cram session on driving.

I can't comment on the steering column.

Everyone wrecks, but at the same time he was going straight and appeared to lock up the brakes...alot of the wrecks happen during a slide or spin, honeslty that crash just looked like inexperinece on what to do, not just an accident that couldnt be avoided.
Of course I would still like to see him practice at some loca events(if he doesnt already), kinda get his intuition built up. I think it would be better for him to learn in a less powerful, and smaller car, but at the same time in the long run the bigger more powerful car will make it easier to get used to less powerful smaller cars...

Um no, you just read it incorrectly.
I never said that he qualified on the stock knuckle..I said that for a period of time..he was trying to drift with a stock knuckle and he was struggling with it.
After he crashed the car during drift day..the team left and took the car with them to get it repaired..they were in a hurry..so they put on stock steering knuckles..not modified..but stock..they didn't have the modified steering knuckle with them..that was delievered to the track.
However when it got there..all the drivers were already sent out to the track to do 10 practice laps each on the course layout that they had at that time.
During that time..the stock steering knuckle was on the car. When the session was over..they replaced it...everyone watched them do it while the drivers were at the driver meeting...which is when they voted to change the configuration to the D1 layout.
They were given 5 practice laps on that lay out and then they would qualify..it was from that time on when they had the modified knuckle on the car.Last edited by MonkeySlide; 07-31-2006, 02:10 AM.

Everybody wrecks....its a part of learning.
Ive seen people say: "I'm glad she wrecked her car". So I can understand (a little), when there are a few people hoping that he fails....I also know what its like to have many, many, many, many more who are supportive.
Trips me out to see the amount of people that hate on him all over the net, when they'd give their right nut to be in his shoes.
Just be happy for the kid.
He will get better

i was in the pit area when the first driver's meeting was happening. and it looked like nick was nagging a lot about everything. then out of nowhere when andyyen and alexP were instructing, he looks at verena and goes 'hey hows it going im nick, i saw you on a dvd' . but ya, back to the driving. I really thought he had to stop kicking the clutch. every run he did he kicked the clutch and floored the gas. if any of you have seen fntf-td, nick's just like the main character when he first got to japan and tries to drift the silvia and wrecks it but didnt give up til he got to the finish line. so from my point of view, i think he jumped on the bandwagon just cause he saw drifting on tv. and he needs a weaker car before he starts hitting every wall in the country.

hi everyone,
everyone has their off days, mine was yesterday. i am going to stick with drifting, and i am going to participate in the pro am.
in the morning, the starting cone was moved 40 feet forward from where it normally is, with that little of room to build up speed the viper, could not do it, now i know everyone will say, blah blah blah, its a viper it should be able to build up the speed no problem...wrong. wwhen i gave the viper enough gas to build up the speed i needed for the bank it would spin so hard it would just slow me down, when i didnt and i made it keep traction, it was so little amout of gas, the car would be going too slow for the bank. pretty much a lose/lose situation. now, because of my inexperience, at our practices, i have always come into the bank from a hot lap, never from a stop, so i didnt really notice the cone was moved because i dont know where it should normally be. going too slow, caused me to bump the wall in the morning, break a knuckle, and a few other steering components, after missing the whole day of practice, we came back out last minute, with stock knuckles and i ran 7 horrible practice laps on a new course config.
then the modified knuckles showed up and we switched them, at that time they switched the course. so now back to normal steering angle, but with the rf wheel rubbing. i went back out and had 5 practice laps on d1 config. now this being really the first time the car was right the whole day, except in the morning when i bumped due to slow speed, with the 5 practice laps, it just wasnt enough time for me personally to get re adjusted to the car, now maybe sam could have, but i didnt, im sorry, but everyones different. there was alot of pressure on me yesterday, and i seemed to have lost my head.
thank you to everyone supportive.

Come see us at some real events. Dont try to be a superstar overnight there is no reason. With more track time (and not just private practice events) you would have been able to save that crash. I wasnt trying to be a *Censored**Censored**Censored**Censored* but I am firm believer that you need more seat time. And especially with a sport that is so grassroots oriented, hell everyone knows everyone esp. socal drifters are super tight nit. Just come out and practice, honestly you should have been running Just Drift Comp yesterday instead of FD. And to all that dont know me and think I am just an ingnorant internet drifter. I have qualified for my FD license and yesterday I took 1st place in the tandem comp at WSIR with Pat. You will get better with practice but until people know you and dont think you are just a spoiled rich kid with everything handed to you this is what you are going to get on the internet. Everyone are haters on the net. Glad you went back out there, after I hit at long beach even though the car was pretty much undrivable I went back out and did my best, its all you can do need to stick with it.
