Its not a surprise he got beat I mean comeon he's throwing nearly a half a ton more weight around than a comp-level S15. Thats why he couldn't hold the drift angle. Heavy cars are harder to control in the drift due to the momentum the rear picks up. But car aside he had no practice time and still managed to break the top 8!! Thats great for a debut IMHO and there are better things to come I'm sure.
As for the morons that boo'd him that just shows how disrespectful people are and how little they know about USDM stuff. Don't forget they've got the 'ol C5R layin around. I'd love to see that thing come in the D1 and blow 'em away.

well, just goes to show you that a domestic can't quite do it the way the imports can. the way they're made now, they're just too damn big...

...they're good for exhibition though, anyone see that viper?

Yeah drifting a 3500lb car isn't easy, I know that from experience. But Rhys was able to consistently drift the big GTO without spinning it, and he had hardly had any practice in it at all. He beat other American guys in Japanese cars that are known quantitys with an untried car. So we know the guy has talent.
As for the GTO, I agree with the person who said that after he's run Formula D for a year and tweaked the car then Rhys will have a lot better performance in next years D1. I mean expecting RHYS to come in and win the D1 is like expecting the Tundra to win the Daytona 250 in it's first try.

Now I have a few ideas for Pontiac and Rhys that may help

          1. Talk to the guys drifting the Soarers and the Chasers in the D1 if that's possible. Those guys have been drifting heavy cars for years, so I'm sure that he could learn something from 'em.

          2. According to what I've read there have been some Monaro's (the GTO's Austrailian sister) drifting donw under so maybe they have some ideas/setups/parts for drifting the GTO that Pontiac doesn't know about.

          3. Don't give up. There are plenty of guys around that want to see this GTO give the Japanese guys a run for their money.

And can you explain how you came to this conclusion? Do you honestly think the results of a single event has anything to do with the capabilities of all domestic cars in general? Cuz last week at some local 1/4 mile street races I saw a bunch of imports loose. If I followed your train of thought then that would mean its impossible for imports to ever win a 1/4 mile race. And we both know thats not true. So please explain why you think a domestic cant drift? And just to let you know, the GTO made it to the Final 8, which means he did place better than alot of Japanese cars that are known for drifting. What do you have to say about that?

Heh, im going to have to agree with crazyhawaiian.

And trust me there is no bigger fan of imported cars then my self.

im glad the car that nocked out the GTO was a Silvia.. i mean how often does a Silvia get to go against american muscle? but give the GTO a break its brand new. and the GTO is hardly repersentative of all american cars.

I didnt know cars could drive themselves (can you feel the sarcasm?). I think he did damn good for making the Final 8 in a brand new car with minimal practice. Keep in mind that the people he was competing against have had practice in those cars for YEARS and they have had YEARS to tune the car. Not to mention they have YEARS of previous experience at the D1. Dont hate, appreciate!

dont assume if they super v8 racing in speedvison then there must be a wide audience

anywas all u guys sum it up rhys was a good driver and got on to the d1 with his own merits but they shoved a car to him and told him to drive against personaly tuned machines, it wasnt his car, they havent tuned it for him, now next year we will see if he can do better with a personalized car to match his talent

                    Until then makes vids!

Well said 180onthebricks. We should be supportive of Rhys and let him and Pontiac know we want to see this GTO mature and be able to take on Japan's best.

Before you all get real crazy with this he could have done better with the right crew twistin the wrench. The OZ crew is who needed to tune the car and there are more than enough parts to get that running top shape. What I wanna know is how much money did Pontiac pay to keep that car in the line up. What was the price 20k a lap because that was not drifting by anyones standard. I can think of a few people that could have taken that car in that package and done alot better.

I didnt think it was doing good enough to go on to top 16. I guess they gave him extra points for the weight, or just wanted to see it go head to head with a Silvia

let me rephrase that, its too big when compared to the other cars it competed against...anything that heavy cant really compete with something as nimble as a silvia when it comes to drifting

the same can be said for ueo's 86 edging out N.O.B's silvia, it was lighter so it could be more agressive...

...don't get me wrong, im not a rabid import fan...that's just my understanding

Nob could have beat ueo if he didnt block him out.
