what was the purpose of qualifying today? To have 2 fewer drivers to entertain the crowd tomorrow?

I bet those drivers feel pretty crappy, considering the amount of media who attended an event on a Friday in March is probably pretty slim....

you would be surprised..there was a decent amount of media out there today...

Enough media that the 2 drivers who didn't qualify for tomorrow will get so much exposure that they won't care?

XDC should be worried about return on investment. They want as many of their drivers to get as much exposure as possible. One of those cars that was eliminated has a substantial amount of sponsors. If there's even 1 more media guy there tomorrow than there was today, that sponsor got LESS return on their investment than they would have if there WASN'T an elimination today.

the elimination did nothing but limit the exposure that 2 drivers and their sponsors will get from this. Limiting exposure isn't something XDC wants to do at their first event.

Its not the series' fault that someone didnt qualify. It could happen to anyone, sponsors or not.

I can only assume they use a top 20 tandem bracket...
How much credibility would a series have if they decided that on this day they would let 22 drivers in to the main event instead of the 16 or 20 that normally takes place, just cause the drivers list wasnt long.

The purpose of qualifying is to set a bracket.... in this case it was a top 20. If 30 drivers showed up... than 10 of them with or without sponsors would get less exposure on the day of the main event. In this case only 22 drivers signed up so only 2 got sent packing. Thats competition, thats how it works....

also there were quite a few people who couldnt get their cars finished in time.

and there were a few at the event that barely got there car done and even had some work to do on their car over there.

i think all of u r missing his point

im pretty sure he understands the concept of qualifying and understands what it is for and doesn't need an explanation

he is saying that by running qualifying on friday when there is less media u r eliminating alot of cars that could potentially bring more media attention on saturday (if qualifying was saturday every car is guaranteed to be on the track getting media attention rather than just 16 or 20 of them), hence less media exposure for XDC and i totally agree with him

but if xdc is choosing to run the qualifying on friday rather than saturday for the sake of not having a show that drags a$$ all day long and gets boring to watch, i also understand that too

they had solo runs on friday and only holding tandem sat?

                      that kinda sucks

but hot damn look at that list, alot of those guys have major years drifting under their belt. Lance, Alex, Andrew, and Quoc all benn puting it down for 4 + years.

Nick speaking of a show that drags....... that is the difference I see between Japanese and American drift fans. The Japanese will watch every second of an event, qualify rounds in all.

yea when I was part of judging in nopi we decided that practice all day the first day would make a better show the next day. These are (supposed to be) ProAm drivers who need a little more seat time than FD Pro and the more they get, the better they are, better tandem they will have, better show for crowd, more runs = more woth the expense, and more exposure for all. If XDC is only gettin 25ish drivers an event, they should make those 25 happy.

I'd love to go drive this series, financially a lot of us are screwed.

if you made it into the finals its because you showed up. if you didnt qualify its because your car broke or you suck really bad.

and also who are you referring to with this:

"One of those cars that was eliminated has a substantial amount of sponsors"

                              Drifting, not politics

Drifting is about the driver, his car and the team, not the sponsors or the media. When your out, your out, regardless of the judges, your car breaking, having a bad day, 50 drivers or just 20 drivers or whatever. You just man up. load up and go to the next race and hope everything works out. You can have the best day of your life and still lose and sometimes you have a bad day and you win. That's what makes drift different than other sports where finish line tells the story. In drift, you have to battle everyone, including the car, weather and the judges. If you do what you want and start pleasing the media and sponsors first, the integrity of the drifting is gone and once again money takes over and the era of the privateer is gone.

Now, on another note, the format should be different for the pro-am than FD, you have less qualified drivers who need seat time, let them practice all day long the day before and force them to tandem, its as fun to watch the practice tandems as the real race and that is good for the crowd---practice solo runs on early schedule before the crowds get in, then start the tandems practice on race day, and please no qualifying on Friday, there is too much money spent by these privateers plus travel not to make it to Saturday, thats being short sighted by management and hurts the show. The drivers who broke down Friday should get the day and night to get their car rolling, that's exciting and that is drift....and most of all you start developing the drivers for a better show. I hope XDC realizes this and caters this to the people and drivers.

Don't shoot me, its only my humble opinion.
