Best tandem battle of the year in 2010 voted for the FD awards banquet? D-Mac and Tanner Foust. Anyone who saw those two go at it on a couple of different occaisions throughout 2010 would almost certainly agree. It was insane.

Both were running high horsepower V8's. It made for one hell of a show.

C'mon over to the dark side Ross. Anyone who tells you your V8 S15 is too easy to drive going that fast, or thinks D-Mac or Tanner had it easy in those battles didn't see those guys get out of the car afterward.

Looking forward to seeing you run hard this year.

Those are sick battles, too bad both those cars are gone

I personally like the "steroid" drift cars, I just feel the way the sport is currently judged its not real fair to match up these cars with the more traditional builds. I vote for more options and less restrictions (classes).

If you don't like the cars in FD then don't show up. Plain and simple.

There's plenty of people who will take your place. Last year, Long Beach / Irwindale were both sold out, and attendance was up at every single FD event. If you don't buy a ticket, someone else will. No loss to FD.
Be careful what you wish for, you speak like the series is 3 decades old and has a proven fan base already. Those type of fans do currently exist and don't go to FD events, if and when ticket sales drop it will be a awkward moment when FD has to reach back out to them.

I have friends who refuse to go to long beach but go to irwindale, and I got a few buds who just don't go to either anymore some just lost interests and a few just really dont like FD (rather attend D1).

looking on from afar i still think there should be scope for overtaking in the twin battles , rather than running the qualifying line and matching the lead it would free the drivers up to drive their fastest line and be more agressive in the chase role too.

I think the majority of the responses are now expressing thoughtful points either in support or criticism . THAT is good.
I came from V8, but don't currently have one in a car. I have some 50+ year old V8's and speed parts for hot rods but those are NOT the right thing for drifting.
My drift/track cars have SR and KA. So my statements are not out of bias but a general disdain for the negativity being thrown around by so many.
I support the drivers, not their engines. It's what the driver does that makes them successful or outstanding, regardless of the drivetrain.
              D1 is D1.
              FD is FD.
              Team BURST ROCKS!!!!!
Sorry Ross, Frank and BOSO for the thread cluttering. Get it done and see you in Long Beach!!!!

I think that in order to build a COMPETITIVE FD car nowadays, a v8 is required. The car builds have reached such a high level that four cylinder turbo cars just can't keep up. I do admit I love the sound of a naturally aspirated high reving 4age or a rotary, they just cannot remain competitive. I'm using a NA ae86 this year at local events as a way to help learn car control and not depend on power, but next year I will be building a 350z to try and become competitive in. I was planning on a Vortec supercharged Brian Crower stroked 4.1 liter Vq, but lately a v8 makes so much more sense. I actually thought about just dropping a 1uzfe in the rolla.

1uz would be nice in a AE86. All aluminum four cam v8 and stock 280 hp to the crank w. 10:1 compression. The more pricey thing is converting to 5 spd.

                        Heres some videos from today.

I feel that FD has worked to continually improve the product they put on track, and that the live event they produce is well worth the price of admission. I've been to a majority of FD's 45 events, spending my own money to attend several events in Seattle, Chicago, Atlanta, and NJ. Every single plane ticket has been purchased out of my own pocket, not by any team, sponsor, or organizer. I do it because I'm a fan of this sport first and foremost. I still get chills during some of the tandem battles 8 years later! This sport is absolutely electrifying to watch in person, moreso now than ever. The fanbase of drifting continues to grow, and although some of the purists are leaving, there's plenty of run-of-the-mill fans filling their places, and that passing of the torch is actually a healthy situation for FD.

I'd say that JR vs Powers was boring for another reason, but I won't get into that argument on here.

Sadly, I disagree. I'd say Aasbo vs JR was the best tandem battle of the year. Of the 5 events Aasbo attended, he met JR in 4 of them and beat him once (making him one of only 3 drivers to beat JR head-to-head all year!) .... but that's another argument

I feel that FDs best days are behind them but not that far behind that they cant compare and contrast. 2008 was the best year in my eyes, huge variety of drivers/builds, lots of new unfamiliar faces on the podium,100pt qualifying run, and a great world championship event (if one bothered to show up).

Now in years 09/10 qualifying action is non existent, its not even worth buying the two day ticket. And we get lame tandem battles like Powers vs Gittin. But I agree, its well worth the $30 dollars, back in the day I felt like I was stealing from FD and D1 paying $20 lol. But hey, I'm willing to pay 40-60 for a better show .

Now they had made some changes over the offseason which they say will even the playing grounds by making the teams pay for tire width with chassis weight. I predict this will lead to less smoke, less speed, which is less action with the $marter teams being able to diagnose and adjust...but that's just my opinion and only time will tell.

What makes a bad battle like Gittin vs JR? A poorly built traditional car with what seems to be poor choice in tire pressure versus a professional built "untraditional" car... That's just my opinion without digging in on a driver talent... but when you let 90% of the field go head to head what do you expect? The thing that gets me angry is this battle took place in the TOP 8.

The fan situation is still unproven, we are not even a decade deep yet so the torch isn't even lit IMO. Flyers and Billboards will get the fans to the events but quality will make them stay. A satisfied customer will return with new customers and so on and so forth. With that being said, FD is lucky there's not a whole lot of competent competition. If there was a alternative in sight trust I would test it out.

So, Bebop, you're looking for a freestyle type qualifying again? I'll admit, I miss the days where you would see a driver just suddenly pop open his door mid-drift and hold it open with his foot the rest of the run in qualifying. But, I guess the reason that's gone away is because of the need to make qualifying more objective than subjective.

Anyhow, this is a topic for another thread. Petty's build is coming on strong and I can't wait to see it done and out there running.

Doors opening, rodeo drifting, or hand gestures? No, but I think jumps would be cool ! I would like qualifying to actually mean something other then weeding out the worst of the worst. I would probably figure out a way to pick up the pace a bit as well. I feel qualifying has become too strategic, not enough drivers leaving it all on track.

And the "I'm just happy to be here" type drivers are facing off with the real championship competitors just equates to lousy battles. If I was a competitor my main objective is to win the championship or impress the crowd, not to squat on a slot on the bracket. When I hear a spotter tell a mid ranked driver to "take it easy on this run" my stomach turns.
