Vaughn Gitten (D1GP WINNER!)
Irvine, CA September 27th 2005 - D1 Grand Prix USA vs Japan All Star Exhibition was a night to note in drifting history. Vaughn Gittin Jr. a Falken Tire driver took first place in his Ford Mustang over the Japanese drivers. His road to victory was a worthy one for he defeated Yasuyuki Kazama, the 2005 series champion and Youichi Imamura the 2003 series champion.
Many drivers leading up to the qualifying had troubles adjusting to the mirrored clockwise track change. Rhys Millen the leading US points leader of the 2005 series was the first to crash in practice causing him to retire. The father of Rhys, Rod Millen the famous Rally driver had his first shot in D1 and qualified up to the best 16 along with the US D1 favorites, Alex Pfeiffer, Samuel Hubinette, and Tanner Foust.
