  • Feeling discouraged...

Folks, i've been looking for a 240 for a while now, and to be honest, this price increase due to popularity is really starting to annoy me. I've been frustrated to the point that i've nearly given up on trying to find one. Throw up some encouragement and advice. I really am interested in drifting, i just don't that it's sensible for my low budget condition. I finally got a job though, and i'll be making about 150 a week (before taxes) So i'll have some money now, but i'm getting irritated. I was at lowes today and some guy had I believe a 91 240 hatch, with silver lined fender flares and a supra wing (he was like, 40) and he wanted 3500. This is quickly getting old. I'm not paying 3500 dollars for a 12 year old car that really isn't all that great in it's usdm form. Someone help me out, I need a savior, lol.

I dream of being that one guy who can drive the balls off of everyone else, i just can't afford my dreams.

i waited about 4 months before i found the 240 i wanted. I dont know ow your searching but i wouildnt recomend trying to buy a car on a forum. It seems like people know what their potential is and try to getmore money. In socal we have the autotradewr. I would look in newspapers, used car magazines, and sometimese japanese markets. Good Luck!!!

wow, $3500 is a good deal depending on condition of the car.....i got my 240 fastback for $4500 BEFORE the 240 craze got all hyped up.....a japanese guy owned it and was trying to make it into a 180 but decided to go back to japan for school.....it was pretty clean besides a few paint chips here and there....it had kouki tails, apexi exhaust, side markers, RS-R springs wit some shocks......look up the price for a 240 in kelly blue book, i think it should be around that price range....i could be wrong.....what r u looking to spend? 500? 1000?....u gotta be realistic, u cant get nothin but a shell for that price or an automatic(lol).....save up at least $4000 to buy a 240 in decent condition in stock form......if u really want that car, you'll get a better job that pays more than $100 a week or get 2 jobs to save up quicker.....

first off, dude, i'm 18 (have been for half a year). i've not been able to get a job seeing as no one around here is hiring. secondly, i'm not asking how to afford a car. even my simpleton mind can understand money=car, what i'm asking for is ideas as to how to get around this stupid popularity issue, and also for advice as far as pursuing it goes. I don't have much money, so maybe it's not so wise for me to try and dig into drifting (i don't know, which is why i'm asking). 3500 really isn't a good deal when similar cars that don't look like suck (240s, not just similiar styles) are going for 1500-2000 (very rare, but you can still get them that cheap around here).

Regardless, again, i understand how to get a car, but i'm looking for stuff more along the lines of the canada recomendation, or maybe recommend a different vehicle? shoot more towards being helpful and less towards downplaying a question you clearly can't answer.

i thought about it, but i'd rather just own the car. I guess my question really is more along the lines of, is it wise for me to try and invest my money in a "drift car" which i probably can't even drive? or, would it be better for me to say, ok, here's an example of the kind of answers i want:

"Hey, you should get a 57' bel-aire, they're sluggish, but there's plenty of aftermarket for the 5.7liter and with mild tuning they could go sideways. Don't worry about the money, if you want to drift, then do it, i've had my car for one million years and have drifted for 450454 of them, and it's not really cost me that much other than tires and gas on top of regular car maintanance, lahblabhalbahblbahbab"

obviously that's a little ridiculous, but hopefully you understand a little better. (not you specific, you general)

There's a lot of other options...

Fox body, F body, E36, a REAL 240 (volvo), and FC to name a few. I mean if your heart is set on a 240 than sure, go pay too much for a car that's not "worth it". If it is worth it to you than nothing else matters, for real. I'm not screwing with you, I don't really like them but if you are all about it than what can I say.You gotta do what you gotta do.

If you HAVE to have a 240, you can...

Buy something smashed up (but not a lot!) or just dented and crappy and bang it back into shape. Bodywork is not rocket science.

Buy something with a blown motor and swap it. It shouldn't be too hard to source a KA.

Buy a less desirable model. For example, grab one with an automatic. You can always convert it.

Hope I helped. Like I said, for the money I would buy something else. I tried to think of common, RWD driftable platforms for you, but really there's so many cool cars out there that you can buy for 4500 bucks I would shoot myself if I dropped it on a 240sx.

parry, you are one of those guys i love to hate/hate to love, but am forced to anyway. don't take that wrong, what i just said was a good thing, believe it or not. I appreciate the words. I don't know really about the 240. i've always disliked them, because, and yes, i am disgracing the "blessed" name:

The usdm 240 is a sluggish fart on 4 wheels. it sickens me to see everyone saying civic's suck balls and 240's are good cars. nothing wrong with a 99si, it'd probably leave an s13 sitting, for the next 250000 miles. however, i think for drifting, as power isn't completely nessicary, it (the 240) is a good platform. I love fc's, i think they are beautiful cars, but the maintainance is just beyond me. i may look into bimmers. how is the aftermarket as far as they go? i've never been into euro's, but, i'm always open to new things.

                          Porsche

                          Familia/TX3
                          Starion
                          BMW (all models)
                          Ford Escort

If you dont like 240s why not get something else? This is just to show you theres heaps out theres heaps out there. All these are good drift cars you can get for under $5000 aus. Look into other possibilities.

WOOOOW Your crazy!! I hope it was S14 you bought for 4500, or you GOT RIP OFF!!!! I got mine, an S13, for 1400 in Feb, SE coupe with sunroof, alarm, and clean title.

Kid...you can get discourage, but don't be such a PUUUSSSSYYYY!!! Grow some balls, if you want a car go out and find one. If not this weekend its the next, you constantly need to be searching. Ugh...sometimes I hate whining people.

Plus theres tons of other cars, you don't have to get it because its the trend. Get what you can find, check out volvos there cool.

Or if you want, go buy a shell and build it up from stratch. Ususally cheaper if you can get a good shells, like with door locks and what not, the little things get expensive.
